Lanus sign Gonzalo Castillejos

Lanus have completed the signing of Argentine forward Gonzalo Castillejos from Rosario Central for a fee of $2 million.  Castillejos, 23, has put pen to paper a three year contract with Lanus.

Castillejos, 23, made his debut for Rosario Central in August 2007. It took him another two years to score his first goal for the club, which came in September 2009 against River Plate.

Castillejos made nineteen appearances for Rosario Central in the 2009 Apertura,  two of which were from the bench. He scored four goals for Los Canallas.

Rosario finished 10th in the 2009 Apertura. Lanus ended up on the same number of points as Rosario, but took ninth place due to their superior goal difference.  Lanus also competed in the 2009 Copa Libertadores, where they were elimina…

Vorm signs new Spurs deal

Tottenham goalkeeper Michel Vorm has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2018.

The news comes just a day after first-choice stopper Hugo Lloris committed to White Hart Lane until 2022.

Vorm, 33, joined Spurs from Swansea in 2014 and has made 26 appearances in all competitions.

I feel respected by the squad and I m the oldest in the group as well, so that’s special in the way that you try to help the younger lads not only the goalkeepers, but also the outfield players in achieving big things, Vorm told the club s official website.

To keep Hugo sharp too I think that goes very well. The respect that I get from the staff and the connection I’ve got with everybody, especially with [goalkeeping coach] Toni Jimenez and the other goa…

Both of these clubs, who are founding members of the Football League dating back to 1888, have experienced mixed fortunes to kick off the campaign. It may seem as if they re heading in two very different directions based on that, but not all is as it seems especially when it comes to the top flight of English football.

Wolves

Emiliano Insua open to Sporting CP reunion

Argentine left-back Emiliano Insua is not closing doors on potential return to Portugal giants

Former Boca Juniors and Liverpool defender was tipped to make a great name for himself in Europe, but has never quite lived up to his billing as he changed quite a number of clubs before settling with Stuttgart in 2015.

The 28-year-old did spend two seasons playing for Portugal giants Sporting CP and a return to Estadio Jose Alvelade was mooted last summer, when Stuttgart got relegated from the Bundesliga.

Insua failed to reach an agreement with Sporting CP at the time as he decided to stay with Stuttgart and help the club recover from a disappointing season.

However, the Argentine international still holds Sporting CP in high regard and is not closing doors o…

Wenger: Mature Arsenal confident over title chances

Arsene Wenger is confident Arsenal have what it takes to win the Premier League title after seeing off Manchester City 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Monday.

Goals from Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud gifted Arsenal a two-goal lead before the break, with Yaya Toure pulling one back for City late on.

Speaking afterwards as Arsenal consolidated second position in the table, two points adrift of Leicester City, Wenger said: It is a game we can come out of happy, but I believe it was very intense.

It has strengthened our belief that we can win the title. We need to fight like that every game.

We are more mature than before and that shows in the games where we are under pressure. We are very ambitious, but you see the Premier League is very difficult. That s…

Kudela handed 10-game UEFA ban for ´racist behaviour´ towards Rangers player Kamara

Slavia Prague s Ondrej Kudela has been hit with a 10-game UEFA ban for racist behaviour directed at Rangers Glen Kamara, who has to serve a three-match suspension for assault.

Kudela was given an initial one-match ban by UEFA as the governing body opened proceedings against him last week, forcing him to miss Slavia s 1-1 draw at Arsenal in their quarter-final tie.

At the time, UEFA s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body confirmed Kudela s suspension was relating to insulting players or others present at the match .

Kudela and Slavia strenuously denied the initial accusations levelled by Kamara in March, with the Czech Republic international alleged to have made a racist comment while covering his mouth towards the end of an ill-tempered round-of-16 second leg th…

All in the mind, Kahn tells James, Neuer

Oliver Khan, the Germany skipper at the 2002 World Cup, says current keeper Manuel Neuer and English rival David James must get their minds right if Sunday s last-16 tie comes down to a dreaded penalty shoot-out.

Old enemies England and Germany meet in Bloemfontein with a quarter-final spot at stake, conscious that their meetings at Euro 1996 and the 1990 World Cup were decided by penalties, with Germany coming out on top on both occasions.

England were also beaten by Portugal at Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup on penalties.

Kahn, whose German side were runners-up to Brazil at the 2002 World Cup, says a shoot-out is a psychological battle of wills between the penalty-takers and the goalkeeper.

The psychological battle between the keeper and player is o…

Guardiola insists Man City must improve despite hitting Man Utd for six

Pep Guardiola credited the quality of his forwards after Manchester City beat Manchester United 6-3 in Sunday s derby at the Etihad Stadium, but said his team can still improve on their emphatic display.

Hat-tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden gave the Premier League champions victory, with the duo becoming the first City players to register trebles against United since Francis Lee in December 1970.

Erik ten Hag s United scored three in the second half to restore some pride, but in truth it was a comfortable win for Guardiola s men, who moved back to within one point of league leaders Arsenal.

In general it was really good, how aggressive we were without the ball, they could not play, the City boss told Sky Sports.

[But] when they have Lisandro […
